In this paper, we study firm-level optimal choices in selecting RD modes: either choose to conduct domestic-oriented RD or importing foreign technology. We incorporate firms' choice in RD mode into the framework of heterogeneous firms, and calibrate the key parameters. Our counterfactual analysis will show how the changes in RD mode potentially affect aggregate TFP and innovation efficiency. The results reveal that domestic-oriented RD mainly increase firms' performance by improving firm-level productivity (supply-channel), while foreign-imported technologies will exhibit a more pronounced signaling effect in the foreign markets (demand-channel). Lastly, we find a 7% decrease in the intra-trade costs could effectively offset the "technology strangle" issue.
